About Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a small chain of ten volcanic islands located just off the northwest island of Africa. Cape Verde was a Portuguese colony up until 1975, having been discovered and settled in the 15th century by explorers. It was not until 1975 that Cape Verde gained its full independence as a separate nation. Portugal’s discovery of the islands is reflected throughout much of Cape Verde’s cultural traditions and style. The ten islands, which are located about 350 miles west of Africa, collectively cover an area of about 1,500 square miles.

Due to its close proximity to the African coastline, Cape Verde serves as an intermediate shipping stop for global trade. Out of the ten islands, there are four shipping ports and seven airports, of which four are international.
